  • West Bengal Yoga Team first participated in National Yoga Championship in 1974 in Patna (Bihar). Till now West Bengal Yoga Team 23 times winners & 18 times Runners-up in National Yoga Championship. The West Bengal Yoga Association is responsible for the preparation and participation of competitors in the National Yoga Championship as well as in Regional events like Eastern India Chapter Yoga Championship, State Games Yoga Championship, State Yoga Championship, District Yoga Championship etc. There is a separate association at district level in Yoga which assists the West Bengal Yoga Association and preparation of Competitors.
  • The selection of competitors is generally carried out on the basis of performance at State Championship. However, at times, special selection trials are also held to choose the competitors for participation in the National Yoga Championship, Eastern Yoga Championship, State Games and other competitions. After initial selection, the competitors are required to attend training camps. The selected qualified & experienced trainers are assisted by the West Bengal Yoga team which provides intensive training for competitors. The other responsibilities undertaken by the WBYA are as follows:

1. Deciding the organization of State Championship

2. Maintaining liaison between the Yoga Federation of India and District associations & members

3. Protecting the amateur status of competitors

4. Arrangement of Diploma on Yoga course

5. Promoting and developing the Yoga

Bharatshree Kamal Bhandari towards in 1972 first sowed the seeds for establishing a Yoga Sports Body at State level at South Calcutta Physical Culture Association, Rash Behari Avenue for promoting the State Yoga Sport in united Bengal. Mr. Kamal Bhandari with the support of Sri Gopal Chakraborty, Sri Hiten Roy, Sri Santosh Sanyal, Sri Dilip Banerjee, Sri Nirapada Pakhira and other honorable persons established the West Bengal Yoga Association (WBYA) in 1973. Mr. Hiten Roy became the first Secretary General of WBYA and Sri Kamal Bhandari was the Founder Secretary of Yoga Federation of India.

  • WBYA the apex Yoga Sports Organization of Bengal Yoga Sport in the West Bengal is responsible for the State contingent’s participation in National Yoga Championship, Eastern Yoga Championship, State Games and State Championship.
  • A special feature of the WBYA is that, affiliated with Bengal Olympic Association & Yoga Federation of India.
  • The WBYA affiliated with District associations of Yoga, there are Yoga Associations in various Districts in the Bengal. The State bodies controlling the different championships are affiliated to the West Bengal Yoga Association and District Yoga Associations. The aim of the District Yoga Associations is to ensure the promotion of Yoga sports in their respective Districts, in conjunction with the State bodies for the yoga sports. The overall responsibility for participation in the National, Asian & World Yoga championship rests with the West Bengal Yoga Association.
